The Union of European Football Association in a statement yesterday announced that the Away Goal rule has been scrapped away from Club Competitions. This Change will effect from the Upcoming 2020/21 Season.
Their Statement revealed that the Away Goal rule was revised as a result of their stats from the 1970’s, UEFA statistics from the 1970’s till date showed a significant decrease in the Percentage of Home Wins and an increase in the percentage of Away wins – This Signifies that teams have been levelling up and eventually surviving the knockout round due to the away goals rule.
Before this Update, if a UEFA Competition Knockout Round Ends in a Draw (i.e. after the First Leg and Second Leg there is no winner) then the winner is decided on Away Goals. This Rule has lead to the Downfall of many European Club Giants Like FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Juventus among others… It has also favored many Underdog Teams Like AS Roma, Ajax, Tottenham and others.
Highlighting the recent development, if a Knockout round seems to end in a tie, the teams will proceed to an Extra Time of of two halves with 15 minutes each. If no club wins from the Extra-time, the teams will proceed to Penalties.
