Manchester United have agreed a deal in principle for the transfer of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.
The club’s Twitter handle confirmed the transfer, ending weeks if not months of speculations and rumours. The deal is said for the transfer of the 28 year old world cup winning defender is said to cost £34.2 million excluding add-ons.
Varane will be set to be one of the highest earners at the English club, pocketing about £350k in wages weekly on a 4 year contract. He had a year left on his current Real Madrid contract and without the hope of a contract renewal agreement, the Spanish giants decided to cash in on their star defender.
Varane would be expected to bring loads of experience to this United back line. Manchester United conceded 14 set piece goals in the EPL last season, second only to Leeds and that must have been playing on Ole’s mind as he scouted for a new defender. Varane’s pace is also said to be a major reason why he was bought, as he is a good foil for the lack of pace of Harry Maguire.
With deals for Sancho and Varane in the bag, United will focus their summer transfer on outgoings, to offload fringe players such as Dalot, Andreas, Lingard.
